Windows XP Professional SP3 Integrated August 2010

With Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 3, you get safer browsing and communication, powerful security tools, and improved experiences. Windows XP is the operating system release that unifies the Microsoft range, with all the desktop versions now built on the NT/2000 code base rather than the shakier foundation of Windows 95, 98, and Me. That makes XP a great upgrade for users of the now-obsolete 9x and Me line, but for those already on Windows 2000 Professional it is a closer call. Despite the similar name, there is no special synergy between Windows XP and Office XP, which works fine on Windows 2000.

    Norton Ghost 15.0.1.36526 SP1 + Serial

Professional Grade Backup and Recovery! Norton Ghost creates full system and file backups, restores from system failures, enables convenient, secure offsite backup, backs up on schedules and events. Norton Ghost protects PCs-including all applications, settings, folders, and files-with advanced backup and recovery. It provides powerful protection with new features such as offsite backups and Symantec ThreatCon integration, as well as enhanced performance, one-to-one remote management, LightsOut Restore capability, and more.
With Norton Ghost you have a choice of backup types: full system (disk image) or specific files and folders. Backups include encryption and error checking to help keep your data safe, while compression, incremental backups, and automatic backup file management minimize storage space. Plus, you can now copy recovery points to a FTP site for easier offsite backup management.

Norton Ghost is ready whenever you need to recover, whether that involves restoring individual files or an entire system. The Software Recovery Disk allows you to start your computer, scan for viruses or hard disk errors, and start the recovery process even if your operating system won't start.

With the advanced tools included in Norton Ghost, you can take data protection to the next level. One-to-one remote management backs up other computers on your network that have Norton Ghost 12.0 or higher installed, and LightsOut Restore lets you install the Software Recovery Environment on your hard disk so you'll always be ready to recover. And now you can also take advantage of up-to-the-minute intelligence from Symantec's industry-leading Internet security research organization by having your backups automatically triggered whenever ThreatCon reaches a specified threat level.

Your PC drive now contains more than text files. There are contacts, financial documents, pictures, and (valuable) music and video downloads. They aren't as safe as you think. A glitch may accidentally occur to corrupt and even delete your files. That's where Norton Ghost comes in. It helps you backup your precious data automatically. Prompt it or let it work in the background like a ghost - quietly protecting your files, transferring them to backup drives, and even optimizing the performance of your PC's drives. There may be a ghost of a chance that you'll ever need Ghost but it's far better to have Ghost fighting on your side. After all, your PC contains key aspects of your life. Protect them with Ghost.

    Dictionary.com for iPhone 2.0

Free, straightforward, and attractive, Dictionary.com for iPhone and iPod Touch has one or two highlights that give it some interest beyond searching for a quick dictionary definition. It isn't the only dictionary application for iPhone by a long shot, but it is a solid effort that has brand name appeal for Internet vocabulary geeks--plus, it's got those helpful tidbits we mentioned. For instance, after typing a search term, you can switch between the dictionary definition and thesaurus without losing your word. Also, the definitions and synonyms are preloaded into the app, which means your world of words won't go dark if you lose Wi-Fi or signal. Unfortunately, it also means there's a lengthy installation wait.
With an intact data connection, the app can read your definition aloud. Logophiles who want more vocabulary excitement can tune into the Word of the Day feature on the phone, and will be prompted to sign up for the e-mail definition delivery service as well.
The iPhone app is missing some of the power behind Dictionary.com on the Web--most notably, the translator and helpful articles. As a search-and-retrieve word application, however, this is a good start for those looking for a free reference app or who are trained to prefer Dictionary.com's experience.

    Google Earth for iPhone 3.0

Despite the potential limitations of the device, the iPhone version keeps up with the performance, features, and usability of Google Earth for desktops. At least, it does while you're using a Wi-Fi network connection. For example, your view of the world starts looking straight down, but you can tilt the view so terrain contours are visible, and generating that variable perspective takes some significant processing.
The iPhone's multitouch screen actually makes using the application easier than the desktop versions. Dragging a fingertip across the screen slides the view appropriately, of course. Two-finger pinch gestures not only zoom in and out, but also, by adding a little twirling rotary motion, steer the view's orientation in one direction or another. When the iPhone is tilted a certain angle out of horizontal, Google Earth reads data from the phone's accelerometer and adjusts your view accordingly, so you can look up into the sky. And it's integrated with the iPhone's capability to locate itself through GPS, Wi-Fi networks, and mobile phone towers. There's even a two-finger drag to tilt the perspective back--flight-simulator gamers might think of pulling the stick back to lift the nose of a virtual airplane--and that you also can zoom in and out with single-finger and two-finger double-tapping, respectively.
One of the few deficiencies of the iPhone version is that it doesn't show all the layers of information that appear in the desktop edition. Nevertheless, the features are impressive, the functionality level is high, and the application is free: Google Earth for the iPhone is a must-grab.

    Yahoo Messenger for iPhone 1.4

Yahoo Messenger smoothly makes the jump to the iPhone and iPod Touch in this mobile imagining of Yahoo's desktop Messenger. In preserving core chatting features, the application shoots off IM and SMS messages, stashes key emoticons, encourages status updates, adds new contacts, and shares photos you've either stored on the camera roll, or have taken fresh through the iPhone's onboard lens.
Yahoo Messenger's clean, crisp iPhone app delivers notifications of new incoming chats while you're in a different conversation window, in addition to alerting you on a separate messaging screen. When a new message arrives, the app sounds the familiar Yahoo ping and buzzes to get your attention when the screen goes dark; however, we don't see a way to turn that off in the Settings menu.
Here are two other iPhone-specific tricks--the chat app flips over to landscape mode for horizontal conversating, and incorporates the iPhone's spell check. While mostly good for fat-fingered typos, the spell check feature is less convenient when you realize the words "hee hee" have been translated as "her her." The digital brains may have some catching up to do.
While Apple's 2.0 firmware will keep the app from running in the background on the iPhone, Yahoo does the next best thing by keeping you signed in, but idle, for 10 minutes while you're off playing with other apps. At the 'time's up,' you'll need to log in anew to continue chatting, and again if you switch back to your desktop Messenger. While you'll certainly recognize the difference between the two applications, Yahoo's successful capture of the desktop client's look and feel bring a rich IM experience to Apple's famous devices.

    Facebook for iPhone 3.1.2

Facebook's application for the iPhone and iPod Touch has grown leaps and bounds in this most recent release. It shines as a concerted effort to adapt the essential functionality of Facebook.com onto the iPhone and iPod Touch while adding perks distinct to the mobile experience. Facebook has expended a lot of time and energy to make the application mirror the interaction you can achieve online, and to make the interface easily navigable. Facebook accomplishes the latter with a new screen from which you can launch a total of nine activities, and read notifications as well.
We're also impressed by the application's ability to manage photos (and video, if you're on an iPhone 3GS) from your phone--deleting and creating albums from the phone instead of just viewing them. Other interactive qualities include RSVPing to events, changing your profile picture, and seeing friends of friends. You're also able to monitor birthdays--a highly requested addition--and view Pages you subscribe to. Another major new feature is the integrated Web browser, which keeps the Facebook experience within the Facebook app. In previous versions, clicking a link would open the Web page in the Safari browser, forcing you to leave the application and open it again to resume your place.
The logical design and sharp images make fulfilling your socializing obligations effortless, from reading and updating status messages, writing on walls, and composing and responding to messages in the in-box. The app is still not as robust as Facebook.com, of course: it still doesn't let you play with third-party apps. However, this version brings you closer than ever to capturing Facebook's real-time social networking from a mobile device.

Photos to Facebook and grenade-tossing goodness: iPhone apps of the week

    iPhone(Credit: CNET)
One of the big iPhone news items this week revolved around an app I wrote aboutin the June 11 edition of iPhone apps of the week. Apparently, Taptaptap, developer of Camera+ (not currently available at the App Store) recently added a feature called "VolumeSnap" that would allow users to snap pictures using the iPhone volume controls on the side of the device. Apple pulled Camera+ from the iTunes App Store saying the app violated Apple's developer agreement terms by using one of the main iPhone controls in a "non-standard way, potentially resulting in user confusion."
I suppose it makes sense to keep things consistent, and of course Apple has the last say in these matters, but I have to agree with the idea that tapping the screen isn't an ideal way to snap pictures. Just about every time you take a picture with an iPhone you're holding it unsteadily in your hand and pressing the screen only moves the iPhone more, sometimes resulting in blurry shots.
Am I asking for another button on the iPhone? I wouldn't go that far, but now that the iPhone 4 has upped the ante with a 5-megapixel camera, it just might be the kind of thing Apple needs to consider. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
This week's apps include a free photography app that makes it easy to share your photos and a demolition type game that offers a unique twist on other popular games in the iTunes App Store.
    SayCheeze
Before you upload, you get to choose between the original image and one with a random effect.
    (Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)
SayCheeze (free) is a photography app that's focused on snapping pictures and sharing them on Facebook (almost) immediately. While not all of us are out there snapping pictures wherever we are, those who do will appreciate the simplicity of SayCheeze's interface. Start by using the settings to log in to your Facebook account, then flip the switch for auto-upload to the "On" position. From there, every time you snap a picture, your photo will automatically be uploaded to Mobile Uploads on Facebook almost immediately. If you want to check out images before uploading them, you can turn off auto-upload and it still only takes a couple of screen taps to upload them quickly.
As a free app, SayCheeze doesn't come with a lot of fancy extras, but it fulfills its intended purpose very well. Extra options include a zoom feature that goes up to 4x zoom and the ability to apply a simple effect to images at the time of upload. My only complaint about SayCheeze is that you can't choose which effect to use on your image--the app chooses randomly from seven basic effects, which means you would need to cancel and then hit upload again to get a new effect. But overall, if you are a person who likes to capture the action and send it to Facebook without a lot of added extra steps, SayCheeze is an excellent free option.

    Fragger
You'll sometimes need to thread the needle with your grenade toss for the best effect.
    (Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)
Fragger (99 cents) takes the concept of hit gameAngry Birds and adds a special-ops spin by instead having you toss grenades into structures that house enemy soldiers. Even with its similarity to the Angry Birds game mechanic, Fragger manages to offer enough variation in levels and enough of a graphical detachment from the popular game to make it both fun and addictive.
What separates Fragger from Angry Birds is the need to make highly precise shots in certain situations. Sometimes you'll need to bank grenades off of walls to drop them into a bunker, while other times the grenade will serve as a method for knocking soldiers off high platforms (where the explosion of the grenade becomes unnecessary).
You get 70 levels to play through across two different worlds, and, judging by the level-select screen, another world will open up in a later release. Overall, if you like demolition games or want a more military feel as you blow up structures than you'd get in Angry Birds, you should definitely check out Fragger.
What's your favorite iPhone app? Is SayCheeze just the photo-sharing app you were looking for? Do you think Fragger is too much like Angry Birds or is it a great game in it's own right? Let me know in the comments!
